Samuels to challenge the ban

By IANS,

Melbourne : West Indies Marlon Samuels, who has been slapped with a two-year ban for hobnobbing with an Indian bookie, has decided to challenge the order in a court.

Samuels flagged a legal challenge to his two-year ban for the bookie affair, and he will have the support of one of the men who banned him, Herald Sun reported.

Former West Indian skipper Richie Richardson, who was part of the Weset Indies Cricket Boad (WICB) disciplinary committee that found Samuels guilty, had later argued that International Cricket Council’s stringent laws were responsible for the ban and it was unfair on the cricketer.

He was found guilty of dealing with bookmaker Mukesh Kochchar before a one-day match against India in Nagpur in January 2007. But the board could not find that Samuels “did anything dishonestly or for a corrupt purpose”.

The committee’s published findings recommended Samuels be given a suspended sentence.
