Differences on Project in French Polynesia

By Prensa Latina,

Wellington : The Parliament of the French Polynesia, a French colony, has not yet approved a development contract for 680 million dollars, an agreement which should be signed in Paris in two days.

According to Radio New Zealand, there was a new delay in the Assembly of Papeete, the capital, since the opposition wants to debate slight emmiendas before the approval.

The president of the Legislative postponed the session until Friday.

Meanwhile, the government demanded to restart it, but the opposition said it is illegal to disregard the four days established for the discussion of the project.

Gaston Tong Sang, president of the Overseas Collectivity, went to France to sign the agreement with French Prime Minister Francois Fillon and President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Radio New Zealand pointed out that the possibility of the signature of the agreement in Paris exists, before legislators have approved it.

Located to the south of the Pacific Ocean, the French Polynesian is composed by several groups of islands, being Tahití the most famous and populated.

The islands, annexed by France during the19th Century, add 1,868 square miles, with 3,265 inhabited islands.

The economy of the French Polynesian is fairly developed and it depends on imported inputs, tourism and financial funds coming from France.
