Bomb attacks kill two policemen, civilian in Pakistan (Lead)

By DPA,

Islamabad : Two policemen and a civilian were killed Saturday in two separate bomb attacks in restive north-west Pakistan, officials said.

A powerful roadside bomb exploded next to a police vehicle near an Afghan refugee camp in Nasir Bagh, located on the outskirts of Peshawar, the capital of North-West Frontier Province (NWFP).

Area police chief Khaista Khan and his driver were killed and two more law enforcers were injured in the bombing, Senior Superintendent Police Peshawar Imtiaz Shah said.

The blast by a remote-controlled device was so powerful that it completely destroyed the vehicle and the body parts of the dead were tossed several metres from the scene onto the rooftop of a house.

Separately, one person was killed and two more people were injured in an explosion that targeted a private vehicle in the tribal district of Khyber Agency, some 20 km from Peshawar.

Pakistan’s NWFP province and the nearby tribal area bordering Afghanistan have seen dozens of assaults on security forces by pro-Taliban militants over the last 14 months. Since the new government opened peace talks with the rebels in March, the attacks fell sharply but did not stop completely.
