Upbeat Lehmann certain that he will play at Euro

By DPA,

Palma de Mallorca (Germany) : Upbeat Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has said he is confident that he will be first choice keeper at next month’s European Championships.

The 38-year-old, who has not yet signed for a new club after leaving Arsenal at the end of the season, told journalists at Germany’s training camp in Palma de Mallorca, that he would be playing. “Of course I will be playing. That is why I am here.”

Lehmann, who spent most of the past season on the bench at Arsenal, is hoping to show that he is still a good goalkeeper. “That is a motivating factor.”

He said that he did not know whether he would continue playing for Germany after Euro, nor whether he was going to sign for Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart.

“It is a club that is very well run and plays attractive football.” He said they had a good coach and manager. “Those are all arguments that speak in favour of me joining Stuttgart.”

Lehmann, who first played for Germany in 1998, was a member of his country’s squad at the 2000 and 2004 European Championships, as well as the 1998, 2002 and 2006 World Cup competitions, but only played in the 2006 edition, being understudy to Oliver Kahn for the other tournaments.
