May call off stir, Bainsla indicates

By IANS,

Bayana (Rajasthan) : Softening his stance, Gujjar leader Kirori Singh Bainsla indicated Monday evening that the agitating community members may call off their four-day old agitation that has left at least 37 people dead “once they see the letter written by Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje to the prime minister” on their demand for Scheduled Tribe status.

Hours after asserting that the stir was indefinite and there would be no compromise, Bainsla told reporters here: “We appreciate Vasundhara Raje’s initiative to write to the prime minister. Once we get a copy, given to us by a government official, we may decide to call off the stir.”

Bainsla’s stance comes in the wake of a state cabinet meeting earlier during which it was decided to throw the ball in the central government’s court. The state government has decided to write to Prime Minister Manmohan SIngh to call a meeting of all states where Gujjars reside to decide on their demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
