Jalpaiguri (West Bengal) : A rebel leader, entrusted with the task of spreading a Maoist organisation's wings in the tea garden areas of north Bengal, was arrested from Jalpaiguri town Sunday.
Police said young Maoist leader Pradip Chatterjee was wanted for some time and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested him with firearms, ammunition, cash worth Rs.10,000 and Maoist leaflets and literature.
"I did not have any firearm with me," Chatterjee said as he was whisked away in a police van from Beguntari area of Jalpaiguri, about 650 km from Kolkata.
Chatterjee was earlier imprisoned for about eight months for his involvement in Maoist activities.
His mother Rina Chatterjee said: "My son is not a Maoist. He was involved with the APDR (Association for Protection of Democratic Rights) and the movement for releasing prisoners."
