Islamabad : Top Pakistani political leaders had another round of talks on the issue of the restoration of deposed judges but failed to reach any agreement, party leaders said.
However, they agreed to scrap power of President Musharraf to dissolve the parliament and appoint services chiefs and governors.
PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari and the former Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif met in Islamabad to discuss the restoration of 60 judges, who were sacked by Musharraf when he imposed emergency rule in November.
“Both the leaders discussed the issue confronting the country and the nation and prevailing political situation,” a statement from the ruling PPP said.
“Asif Ali Zardari presented his point of view and explained the salient features of the proposed constitutional package to the PML (N) leadership”.
He asked Mian Nawaz Sharif to support PPP so that the supremacy of the parliament and civilian institutions can be restored as was desired by the electorate of Pakistan through their votes in the election 2008.
Mian Nawaz Sharif assured the PPP delegation that PML (N) will respond to PPP after having a detailed review of the proposed constitutional package, the statement said.
The two leaders had met few times on the issue in recent months but could not reach any agreement and the PML-N quit the cabinet after the failure.
“Both sides agreed that all issues including the issue of ‘judge’s restoration’ will be settled through mutual talks,” the statement said.
“A consensus will be evolved between the two sides and other coalition partners will also be taken into confidence before tabling it in the National Assembly”.
