Islamabad : Heavy floods in Pakistan's southern and southwestern areas have affected 800,000 people as armed forces are engaged in a large scale rescue and relief operation, the army spokesman said Saturday.
Cyclone storms in the Arabian Sea on Tuesday caused heavy rains in the country's costal areas in southern Sindh and southwestern Balochistan.
Reports suggest that some 250 people have died in the flood affected areas of Balochistan and Sindh.
Army spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad told a news conference that eighty thousands people have been displaced while around eight hundred thousands affected.
He said six C-130 aircraft, carrying fifty tonnes of relief goods, flew to the worst affected Turbat, Gawadar and Pasni in Balochistan on Saturday and distributed the goods among thousands of affected people in the province so far.
He said six helicopters are engaged in round-the=clock rescue and relief operation in Balochistan and additional helicopters were sent to Turbat, Gawadar, Bolan and Jagmagsi.
To a question, the spokesman said that about ten thousand stranded people have been rescued from Balochistan and North West Frontier Province.
Answering questions regarding infrastructure rehabilitation in Balochistan, he said two army construction teams have reached to rehabilitate and repair the coastal highway which has been damaged quite extensively.
