Six Injured As Explosion Rocks Philippine City

By Bernama,

Manila : An explosion ripped through the entrance of an airbase in southern Philippine city of Zamboanga Thursday morning, wounding at least six civilians, said China’s Xinhua news agency quoting a report in a local media.

The blast happened at around 10 a.m. (0200 GMT) near the gate of the Edwin Andrews Airbase in Zamboanga, the on-line edition of Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted military sources as saying.

Major Eugene Batara, spokesman of the Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom), said the nature of the explosion has not been determined.

Batara said the military has not recorded any death but a local radio station earlier reported that there were two deaths.

Local police said the injured have been sent to the hospital and their identities are not immediately clear.

Reports said the shrapnel from the explosion damaged the office of congresswoman Beng Climaco and several other premises located at the airbase.

No group has claimed responsibility for the blast so far.
