Panipat (Haryana) : The Gujjar agitation for a bigger piece of the quota pie took a violent turn here Thursday with community members clashing with police and blocking the main highway to the national capital New Delhi.
Gujjar demonstrators hurled bricks and stones at police at a village near Samalkha town in this district. They later gathered near the national highway (NH) number 1 to New Delhi and tried to block it.
The protest by the Gujjars was in support of the demand raised by their community in neighbouring Rajasthan that the community be given reservation as a Scheduled Tribe.
Demonstrations by the Gujjar community were also reported from Hissar and other districts of the state where the community has some presence.
The state government had kept the police on alert after a call by the Gujjar community for a protest in the national capital region (NCR) in and around Delhi.
Haryana surrounds Delhi on three sides, with the districts of Sonepat, Rohtak, Gurgaon and Faridabad adjoining the national capital.
