Tourism in Agra hit by Gujjar agitation

By IANS,

Agra : Tourism in Agra has been badly hit by the Gujjar agitation that continued for the seventh day on Friday.

Hoteliers in Agra said there was a significant drop in the occupancy rate. “Even domestic tourists are not turning up. This is a major setback to tourism this year,” said hotelier Surendra Sharma.

The train movement on the Agra-Jaipur section remained suspended and passengers were held up at Agra railway stations and roadways bus stands. Transport companies in Agra have refused to book consignments for Rajasthan.

In Firozabad, Samajwadi Party activists demonstrated and a group damaged railway tracks. When the police fired to disperse the agitating mob a young man was critically injured. He was brought to Agra in the afternoon for treatment, but could not be saved.

Samajwadi Party supremo and other leaders have demanded compensation for the bereaved family, according to party sources in Agra.
