Australia begins troops pull-out from Iraq

By Xinhua,

Basra (Iraq) : Australian troops began to pull out from their base in a southern Iraqi province Sunday, a British military spokesman said.

“Australian soldiers started pulling out from the Talil base in Nassriyah province, some 375 km south of Baghdad,” captain Ford told Xinhua.

He said US troops will replace the Australian soldiers.

Australia has 515 soldiers in the province whose main task is to train and support the Iraqi forces.

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd had promised in November to bring back the troops home. Earlier, a survey in that country had found that 80 percent of the Australians oppose the war in Iraq.
