Panaji : State-owned Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) is to build a 105-meter advanced offshore patrol vessel (AOPV) for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), the largest ship it has designed or built so far.
Launched here Monday by Sushmita Dutt, wife of Defence Secretary Shekhar Dutt, the vessel has been named ICGS Samrat.
The AOPV, which will be able to carry a medium-sized helicopter, is totally indigenous and will be built by GSL with state-of-the-art technology, a defence ministry statement said.
With a range of 6,500 nautical miles, the vessel will be able to reach speeds of 24 knots. It will be armed with a 30mm gun.
