Mumbai : Former Test cricketer Dilip Sardesai, who died Monday of multiple organ failure, was cremated here Tuesday in presence of his former colleagues. The last rites performed by his son Rajdeep, noted TV journalist.
Sardesai, 66, was admitted to Bombay Hospital last month with a chest infection. He was shifted to the intensive care unit Sunday.
A galaxy of former Test cricketers, India cricket board officials, politicians, senior police officials and bureaucrats were present at the Chandanwadi crematorium to pay their last respects to Sardesai, popularly known as the "renaissance man of Indian batting".
Former Test captain Ajit Wadekar, Bapu Nadkarni, Indrajit Singh, Ajit Pai, Chandu Patankar, Sandeep Patil, Ghulam Parkar, Suru Nayak, Kenia Jayantilal and Umesh Kulkarni were present at the crematorium when son Rajdeep lit the pyre.
Sardesai, who had played 30 Test matches for India between 1961 and 1972, made 2,001 runs at an average of 39.23 with five centuries, including two double tons, and nine half-centuries.
