Geneva : Thousands of Portuguese fans were celebrating in Geneva Wednesday after earning a place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2008.

The 3-1 win against the Czech Republic was their second win of the tournament in the Swiss city after beating Turkey 2-0 there on Saturday.

The streets were turned into a sea of red and green and the city centre was grid locked once more with cars hooting their horns in celebration.

More than 30,000 supporters watched the match in the stadium. Between 15,000 and 20,000 had followed it on the giant screens in the fan zones.

The fate of Switzerland assured Portugal’s place in the next round after the hosts lost 2-1 to Turkey in Basle, Switzerland.
