Strong earthquake kills two in northeast Japan

Tokyo : A magnitude 7.0 earthquake shook northeast Japan early Saturday, killing at least two people and injuring more than 13.

A 56-year-old man died after falling into the ocean while fishing in Fukushima province. Another man was hit by a truck in Iwate province as he left the house during the earthquake.

At least four were buried under a collapsed house in Miyagi province, while a car was buried under a landslide, according to the Japanese television NHK.

No tsunami warnings were issued.

Five kindergarten children were injured when windows broke, while a recycling centre and a house collapsed in Iwate province.

In Miyagi province, some 10 people have been taken to a hospital. A 30-year-old woman broke her leg while walking down the stairs at a shopping mall.

At least 25 people were injured in a bus that shook during the earthquake.

The epicenter of the quake was approximately ten kilometres beneath south Iwate, said the meteorological center in Tokyo.

High-speed train service in the region was stopped automatically for safety reasons and operators of atomic power plants announced no incidents, according to early media reports.
