By NNN-BERNAMA,

MELBOURNE : Two students from India were killed and another is fighting for his life in hosptial here after their car left the road and crashed into shops early morning.

Police believe speed and a wet road contributed to the accident in the inner Melbourne suburb of Preston.

The accident happened just after 4.30am (AEST) on Saturday when a late 1990s model Ford Falcon veered off High St in Preston, hitting a fire hydrant and colliding with a tree before crashing into several shopfronts.

The driver and front seat passenger died while a third male travelling in the back seat was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with injuries to his lower body.

Police said the students were returning home after celebrating the 22th birthday of the injured passenger.

Said Police Sergeant Keith Jordan : “At 4.40am in morning, with no other traffic on the road, it is rare for this sort of collision in this street.’’

He said it took emergency service about 20 minutes to free the trapped survivor.

All the men were believed to be in their 20s.

Police have been trying to contact the victims’ families in India.
