Decision on n-deal should be unanimous: Congress

By IANS,

New Delhi : The main ruling Congress party Thursday said the decision on the future of the contentious India-US civil nuclear deal should be taken “unanimously” by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) partners.

Asserting that the nuclear deal is in the interest of the country, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh said: “It is not a Congress government. It is a UPA government. Whatever decision we take on the nuclear deal will have to be taken by all the UPA partners together.”

The Congress leader’s remarks came hours after the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) reiterated that the Left parties would reconsider their support to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government if it went ahead with the nuclear pact.

“We should clinch the deal,” Digvijay Singh told reporters here.

He had an advise for the Communist allies. “They should understand that in today’s world no one is an untouchable and we should do what is in the interest of the country.”

According to Singh, the Congress failed to understand the “objections” raised by the Left parties when even a Communist country like China had signed such an agreement with the US to set up nuclear power plants.
