New Delhi : Communist Party of India (CPI) leader D. Raja Saturday conveyed the Left parties’ stand on opposing the India-US civilian nuclear deal to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
“I apprised Karunanidhi (on phone) of the Left parties’ stand on the nuclear deal and also told him about the discussions we have had in the past with (External Affairs Minister) Pranab Mukherjee on the issue,” Raja told IANS.
Mukherjee represents the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in the UPA-Left coordination committee on the nuclear deal.
Asked about Karunanidhi’s response to his phone call, Raja said: “Karunanidhi just listened to me and did not respond. We will discuss the issue in detail when I meet him tomorrow (Sunday) in Chennai.”
Raja is going to Chennai Sunday morning to seek Karunanidhi’s backing to oppose the deal. The Tamil Nadu chief minister has lent unconditional support to the UPA – of which his DMK is a part – on the nuclear issue.
