Baghdad : A second U.S. soldier was killed and three others wounded in Monday’s small-arms fire attack south of Baghdad, the U.S. military said on Tuesday.
The attack occurred shortly before 1:00 p.m. local time (1000 GMT) on Monday as the troops were leaving a council meeting facility in the town of Madain, some 30 km south of Baghdad, a U.S. military statement said.
The troops returned fire and killed the gunman, the statement said, adding that an interpreter was also wounded by the attack.
On Monday, an Iraqi Interior Ministry source told Xinhua that a U.S. soldier was killed and two others wounded when the councilor of the municipality office in Madain opened fire on the troops.
The attacker was then shot dead by the troops, he said.
The motive behind the attack was unclear, the source said, adding that security forces were investigating whether the gunman had ties with insurgents.
The latest deaths bring the death toll of U.S. troops killed in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion to about 4,104, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
