One day in the life of Gordon Brown

By IANS,

London : Prime Minister Gordon Brown is slipping on the popularity charts – in fact, a poll published Wednesday claims the majority thinks Labour cannot win under him next year. But even his critics admire his strenuous, daily routine at 10, Downing Street, unchanged since he came to office nearly a year ago.

The Guardian newspaper has put together an hour-by-hour time line of a day in Brown’s life.

He wakes up at 5.30 a.m. and is ready 30 minutes later to leave his flat for his office to read the day’s media digest and sit on the internet. He is a compulsive e-mailer, messaging and chatting with colleagues and key bureaucrats.

He is back in his personal quarters for an 8 a.m. breakfast with wife Sarah and the children.

The formal routine starts at 9 a.m. with the cabinet secretary’s one-on-one. Brown then reviews his appointments in separate meetings with his press secretary, political aide, chief of staff and No.10 aides.

He then attends cabinet or cabinet committee meetings or meets delegations until lunch time at 1 p.m. – just a sandwich or a short snack with wife.

Post-lunch activities include meeting international delegations or reading mail from the public.

Sharp at 5 p.m., the prime minister goes back to the flat for tea with wife and children. Public affairs keep him busy till 9 p.m.

Then it is time to relax with family, watch football games on television or read till bedtime at 11 p.m.

What does he like most? Fruits for breakfast. And hates? Formal dinners, the paper found out.
