Kuala Lumpur : Ethnic Indian leaders paid rich tributes to K. Gurusamy, chief editor of Tamil daily Malaysian Nanban, who died of a critical illness here.

Gurusamy, 60, was cremated at a cemetry here Wednesday.

Gurusamy had devoted much of his life to his profession and to the community, Human Resource Development Minister S. Subramaniam, who is also secretary general of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), said at his funeral.

Tributes were also sent by MIC President S. Samy Vellu, who is abroad, The Star newspaper said Thursday.

Gurusamy was also a columnist and was better known as Kapar Maan, Bernama, the official news agency, reported.

Tamils, estimated at over two million, form the bulk of the ethnic Indians who came here during the British era. They account for eight percent of Malaysia’s 28 million population.
