Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh): The police gave yesterday a four-hour relaxation in the curfew imposed on 27th June after a dispute over the land of Jama Masjid in Muslim-dominated Sadar area led to violence and brickbatting between the two communities.
Atleast 35 people including 15 policemen were injured in a clash in the old city here over the alleged encroachment of a piece of land of the mosque, following which curfew was clamped in the area.
Talking to TwoCircles.net from Jabalpur, an office bearer of the Students Islamic Organization said when the mosque authorities tried to get the land occupied by Pintu and Ankit Choukse vacated violence erupted. The two were claiming ownership of the land. The fact is that the mosque authorities had already won title suit in the court and now they wanted to get the land vacated.
The police tried a cane-charge to disperse the mob, but the stone-pelting continued and the district administration ordered curfew from Ganesh Chowk to Penti Naka falling under Jabalpur.
However, according to the Superintendent of Police K. Dixit, the situation turned violent when some people tried to occupy the property which is said to belong to Pintu and Ankit. Reacting to the occupation when some non-Muslims protested, another group appeared on the scene and started throwing stones.
In order to control the situation the police had to resort to lathicharge. Later the police had to impose curfew in some sensitive areas including Ganesh Chouk to Tapetti. Today, however, the situation has been brought under total control.
