Shimla : Kaul Singh Thakur, a former speaker of the Himachal Pradesh legislative assembly, was Monday appointed the president of the Himachal Pradesh unit of the Congress, replacing Viplove Thakur.
Viplove Thakur, a Rajya Sabha member, resigned as chief of the Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) after the party’s defeat in the state assembly elections in December last year.
She was told to continue in the post until a replacement was found.
Kaul Singh, who earlier emerged as a frontrunner for the Congress Legislature Party post, was pipped by veteran leader Vidya Stokes.
According to party sources, former chief minister Virbhadra Singh was keen that Gangu Ram Musafir, another former speaker, be made the state party chief. But Stokes’ camp had proposed the name of G.S. Bali, a former transport minister, to the high command for this post.
