Bomb alerts create panic in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow : Amid high tension following serial bombings in Bangalore and Ahmedabad, panic prevailed in Uttar Pradesh Monday with police busy scotching bomb rumours and maintaining high security in the communally sensitive state.

There were bomb alarms at important places in three districts, officials said.

An unclaimed two-wheeler was found parked in Kanpur’s cantonment area causing an apprehension of a bomb.

“The scooter was found near the canteen of the Air Force in the cantonment area in the morning (Monday). The bomb squad was called in instantly and nothing was found in it. We are searching for the owner of the two-wheeler,” Kanpur police chief A.K. Singh told IANS on telephone.

Security personnel all over India have been put on high alert after the back-to-back series of bombings in Bangalore and Ahmedabad left at least 51 people dead and over 100 injured last Friday and Saturday.

In Lucknow and Agra, police and bomb squad personnel launched frisking operations to thwart any untoward incident following calls about bombs.

In Agra, police scanned a commercial building following rumours that a bomb had been planted in it.

In state capital Lucknow here, police combed the main Charbagh railway station after an unidentified person alerted them about a bomb. The search was in progress till reports last came in.
