Agartala : The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Tuesday sought immediate central intervention to control violent protests in Jammu and Kashmir following a row over a controversial land transfer issue there.
“If the central government does not take immediate action, the situation may take a dangerous turn and groups with vested interests could utilise the situation to their advantage,” said CPI-M politburo member Sitaram Yechury.
“Some fundamentalist elements have been aggravating the situation in Jammu and Kashmir,” he told journalists here.
The Jammu region has been witnessing violent protests for more than a month to protest against a state government decision to revoke its earlier move to allot 40 hectares of forest land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) for pilgrim facilities.
Expressing the CPI-M’s concern over the law and order situation in many parts of the country, the Marxist leader said: “The central government should immediately convene an all-party meeting to discuss the internal security situation. All political parties should come together to jointly tackle the situation following the series of blasts in Karnataka and Gujarat, besides violence in Jammu and Kashmir.”
Yechury was here in connection with the 19th state conference of the CPI-M’s Tripura unit.
Speaking about an alliance the main Left party has been attempting to put together, he said: “The third alternative front, without the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), would be based on three common issues – upholding secularism, pro-people economic and independent foreign policies besides India’s sovereignty.”
