Hu expresses sympathy over death of US tourist

By Xinhua,

Beijing : Chinese President Hu Jintao Sunday expressed sympathy to his US counterpart George W. Bush over an incident Saturday in which an American citizen was killed and another injured.

“I would like to express my heartfelt sympathy to you and the family of the victims over this unfortunate incident,” said Hu, while meeting US President George W. Bush in Beijing.

A Chinese man Saturday stabbed to death Todd Bachman, a relative of US Olympic volleyball coach Hugh McCutheon, at a popular tourist site in Beijing.

The attacker, Tang Yongming, 47, then committed suicide by jumping from the second floor of the 13th-century Drum Tower, located about five kilometres from the main Olympic site.

The attack, which occurred hours after the Games started, also injured Bachman’s wife Barbara Bachman.

Hu said he had personally instructed the Chinese foreign ministry to visit the injured American in the hospital.

“We started investigation on this case immediately, and will handle it seriously in accordance with the law. We will keep contact with the US side and inform you of the new developments,” said the Chinese president.

Organisers of the Beijing Olympic Games also expressed condolence and sympathy to the families and relatives of the victims.
