Beijing : President Hu Jintao reiterated Sunday that China is one, when highlighting his position totally opposed to an eventual attempt of separating the island of Taiwan from the mainland.
On receiving the US president George W. Bush today, who travelled here to attend the inauguration of the Olympics Beijing-2008, Hu said the Chinese government will never change its stand on that issue.
He added that whatever the changes in relations between both parts across the Taiwan Strait, the position of only one China and contrary to the independence of Taiwan will never change and cannot be otherwise.
The Chinese leader made votes for closer links between Beijing and Washington while expressing his hope that the United States handles adequately the Taiwan issue to support peace in the Strait of Taiwan.
Hu stressed that under new circumstances, the Chinese government will keep on promoting peaceful development on both sides of the Strait, through economic, cultural and personal exchanges.
