Bangladesh: connectivity with Trans-Eurasia Information Network proposal approved

Dhaka, Bangladesh : The National Taskforce on ICT approved a proposal for joining the Trans-Eurasia Information Network (TEIN) by Bangladesh to build up hi-speed IT connectivity with other countries.

The approval was given at the 6th meeting of the taskforce held at the Chief Adviser’s office with Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed in the chair.

While briefing newsmen after the meeting, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser Syed Fahim Munaim said India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal have already joined the network to build up regional research and educational system called TEIN-3 through IT.

The press secretary said Dr Fakhruddin directed the taskforce to go forward with a time bound vision for a comprehensive improvement of the country’s IT sector. The Chief Adviser put stress on holding next meeting of the taskforce soon.

A power point presentation on IT was made at the meeting.

The taskforce agreed in principle to implement a five-year project titled `ICT Professional Skill Assessment and Enhancement Programme (IPSAEP)’ with a view to grooming up quality IT professionals in the country.

The meeting put emphasis on running such a project jointly by government, academia and businessmen.

It also stressed giving a legal entity to the project and removing all existing bottlenecks.

Under the project, computer graduates will be trained up in different courses while training will be imparted to the computer trainers.

About a proposal of Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) for working capital and loan facilities, the meeting said it can be discussed with the Ministry of Finance and the Bangladesh Bank.

Finance and Planning Adviser Dr AB Mirza Azizul Islam, Special Assistants to the Chief Adviser Brig Gen. (retd) MA Malek, Prof M Tamim and Manik Lal Somaddar attended the meeting.

Among others, IT experts Prof Zamilur Reza Chowdhury, Prof Jafar Iqbal and Mostafa Jabber were present.

Cabinet Secretary, Secretary to the Chief Adviser’s Office, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, secretaries concerned and BTRC chairman were present.
