Five guerrillas, three armymen killed in Kashmir infiltration bid

By IANS,

Srinagar : Eight people – five guerrillas and three armymen, including an officer – were killed during an infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LOC) in north Kashmir Friday, an army source said.

Indian Army troops intercepted a heavily armed group of infiltrators in Kupwara district early Friday morning and asked them to surrender but they, in turn, opened fire.

“When asked to surrender, the terrorists opened indiscriminate fire at the troops that had surrounded them, triggering a gun battle,” the source said.

“Five terrorists have been killed. One army colonel and two soldiers also died. Two troopers have been wounded,” the source said of the fire fight that stretched late into Friday night.

There have been a spate of truce violations by Pakistani soldiers along the LoC in the past few months and intelligence sources say these are primarily meant to provide covering fire to infiltrators attempting to sneak in across the frontier before winter snows close the Himalayan passes.
