Kolkata : West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Friday said his government wants a peaceful solution to the Singur impasse and urged main opposition party Trinamool Congress to continue the dialogue process to resolve the row over land acquisition for the Tata Motors car factory.
“All of us want a peaceful solution to the Singur land row. I hope the dialogue, which we’ve already initiated, would continue in the coming days,” Bhattacharjee told reporters at the state secretariat Writers’ Buildings here.
COmmenting on the political programme announced by the Trinamool Congress, he said: “It’s the democratic right of every political party to stage protests against anything they want. But we would request them not to create any violence during their course of agitation.”
He said the Trinamool Congress had promised to demonstrate peacefully in Singur from Aug 24 demanding that the 400 acres taken from “unwilling” farmers for the car project be returned.
“People in West Bengal want the Nano factory to come up in Singur, thus we also want to resolve the issue mutually,” Bhattacharjee added.
A total of 997.11 acres were acquired for the Tata Motors’ Nano project by the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)-led Left Front government, triggering violent protests in June 2006.
The project witnessed a series of stiff resistance by the villagers, led by Trinamool Congress, over forcible acquisition of farmland.
