Shrawasti(UP): An investigation team of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is in Dhanni Deeh village of Shravasti to investigate the attack and beating up of Muslims here.
The NHRC took the decision to send an investigation team after reports appeared in the media that the Muslim majority village was attacked by Upper Caste Hindus on 10th of July 2007. Muslims allege that 17 women were raped by the mob and then a number of them were paraded naked.
Tension between the two villages started after a Muslim youth of the village eloped with a Brahmin girl from the nearby village.
The investigating team is in Shravasti for three days. A week ago, the commission has sent a notice to the Chief Secretary and DGP of Uttar Pradesh for a factual report within four weeks.
The National Human Rights Commission is the premier human rights body in India which investigates cases of human rights abuse. It has the power to summon and examine any witness under oath.
Shrawasti is also written as Shravasti.
