Guwahati : Top police officials from across India met here Monday to discuss the need for modernising the police force and imparting specialised training, besides scientific advancement to combat terror and other forms of crimes in the country.
The discussions were part of the 39th session of the All India Police Congress.
“The focus of the three-day conference is to find ways to evaluate the performance of the police force in India, besides devising a mechanism to separate law and order from the routine investigations,” Assam police chief G.M. Srivastava told IANS.
A detailed report with recommendations would be submitted to the central government at the end of the meet.
Inaugurating the conference, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi highlighted the need for devising new strategies and imparting specialised training to the police force to deal with terror, saying terrorism today has emerged as a global phenomenon.
“Terrorism today is a global phenomenon and hence the importance of the police force. There is definitely a need to impart specialised training so that the police could turn out to be a potent force in combating all forms of terror and crime,” Gogoi said.
Speakers at the meet highlighted the need for modernising the police force to effectively tackle urban terrorism.
“The Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD) is working towards making scientific advancements and upgrading technologies so that the police force could meet emerging challenges,” said BPRD chief K. Kaushik.
The next two days of the meet would see top police officials from Mumbai and Maoist-hit states speaking on the emerging threats in their respective areas and discuss ways to tackle such challenges in a more scientific way.
