Heavy security and roadblocks in Islamabad

Islamabad, Sep 27 (IANS) Authorities placed Pakistan’s capital under lockdown Thursday to prevent protests as President Pervez Musharraf and two other candidates filed their nomination papers for the upcoming elections.

All the roads leading to the office of the Election Commission of Pakistan were sealed and entry for both vehicular traffic and pedestrians was totally banned, Online news agency said.

The Islamabad Capital Territory Administration cordoned off the Constitutional Avenue right from the beginning at the Convention Centre till Margallah Hills for all kinds of traffic while the entry of common men to the premises was totally banned.

People, including students and journalists, could not reach their destinations and thousands were left stranded on Murree Road due to non-availability of public transport.

Hundreds of armed security officials were present to avert any possible untoward incident during the filing of nomination papers by the presidential candidates.
