Hepatitis-B vaccination drive launched in Tamil Nadu

Chennai : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi Sunday launched mass Hepatitis-B vaccination initiative that will cover nearly 1.1 million children in the state.

The scheme is being implemented at a cost of Rs.72 million and will provide the Hepatitis-B vaccination at all government-run hospitals, primary health centres (PHCs) and health sub-centres in Tamil Nadu. The vaccination will be administered in three doses.

“The government has chosen Tamil Nadu for implementing the Hepatitis-B vaccination programme as the state has successfully eradicated polio and several other diseases and is in the forefront of the vaccination movement in the country,” a statement released here said.

The chief minister also launched 100 mobile medical vans with a doctor and a nurse in each of them for the state’s rural health service. The mobile vans will be linked to 100 block-level primary health centres (PHCs).
