Jaipur : Traffic in Rajasthan’s capital city would now be managed and controlled by women. On an experiment basis, an all-woman team of 16 constables and two head constables has been trained for the purpose.
“We are starting road safety campaign from Monday. The campaign will start with fielding 16 women traffic constables and two head constables in various parts of the city. These constables have been especially trained for this task,” Smita Srivastav, superintendent of police (traffic), told reporters here.
Sources in the traffic department said if the experiment succeeds, each major point in the city would have a woman constable to manage the traffic.
The police department feels the move would help to regulate traffic in much a better way as people would follow traffic rules without pressurising constables to let them go scot-free with violations.
Meanwhile, in a bid to improve people’s perception of the police, Rajasthan Police have decided to impart to its personnel training in “soft skills”.
The main aim of the training, which would be given to all personnel of the rank of constable to inspector, is to develop personal and attitudinal competencies in the subordinate and frontline police officials. This will make the service delivery of the police department more efficient and effective, and thereby improve the public perception of the department.
The police department has sought expression of interest (EOI) from organisations or institutions that have experience in the field.
“Our aim is that this training should bring improvements in the most important variables measuring police performance and public perception, quality of police service, attitude of the police towards the public and public opinion of police helpfulness, among other such things”, an official in the home department said.
