Damascus : Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal al-Mekdad on Friday reasserted his country’s commitment to the statement issued by the Arab foreign ministers in their last meeting over solution to Lebanon’s political crisis.

Mekdad made the remarks while meeting with visiting Norwegian Foreign Minister Svein Sevje, also the Norwegian Special Envoy for the Middle East affairs, the official SANA news agency reported.

Mekdad underlined Syria’s readiness to facilitate efforts by Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa for the implementation of the statement.

He also stressed Syria’s keenness to achieve a just and comprehensive peace in the region based on the necessity of commitment to international resolutions, the Arab peace initiative and the land-for-peace principle.

Both sides agreed on the continuation of contacts to exchange visions between Syria and Norway for the achievement of peace and stability in the region, SANA said.

During their latest meeting in Cairo on Sunday, Arab foreign ministers issued a statement to elect Lebanese Army Chief Michel Suleiman as president, form a national unity government and approve a new election law in Lebanon in a bid to solve the crisis there.

Lebanon is facing today the most critical situation since the1975 civil war which wrecked the country for 15 years.

Lebanese presidential seat has been vacant since former President Emile Lahoud ended his term on Nov. 24, and the sharply divided Lebanese parliament has delayed the elections for eleven times without a consensus.
