Bangladesh seeks Iran’s cooperation in nuclear energy sector

Tehran : Bangladeshi Minister of Power, Energy and Natural Resources Tapan Chowdhury sought Iran’s help in construction of a nuclear power plant in Bangladesh.

According to Iran’s embassy in Dhaka, Chowdhury in a meeting with Iran’s Ambassador to Dhaka Hasan Farazandeh said Bangladesh is seeking permission from International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and is looking for cooperation for the production of electricity from nuclear power plants.

He said that Bangladesh’s limited natural gas resources will run out by 2012, so it is necessary for the country to find a suitable energy substitute.

Chowdhury also pointed to Bangladesh’s low refining capacity and stressed the need for construction of new refineries.

On his part, Farazandeh pointed to Iran’s capabilities in oil and petrochemical sectors, expressed Iran’s readiness for implementation of oil and energy projects including establishment of refinery in Bangladesh.
