Clerics omit women’s rights from marriage documents

Karachi : Clerics in many mosques here remove references to woman’s rights in a marriage from ‘nikah namas’ or marriage documents.

“Many such documents prepared at least in Karachi, if not in the rest of the country, are incomplete because seven out of 28 paragraphs are excluded,” Daily Times said Monday.

The omissions jeopardize the wife’s rights. The clerics give different reasons why they do this, but justify their action.

The omitted paragraphs pertain to woman’s rights in a marriage regarding alimony and divorce among other provisions.
