Kolkata : Four schoolgirls who challenged a gang of thieves were thrown off a local train at Belghoria town in West Bengal.

Police said the incident occurred Sunday night when four Class 8 students of Nondanagar Uchcha Balika Vidyalaya were returning from Ichhapore in North 24-Parganas where they had gone to take part in an inter-school athletics meet.

They were sitting in the ladies compartment of the Santipur train when they saw a gang of woman thieves snatching necklaces and purses from passengers.

When the girls protested, the robbers attacked them and pushed them off the train as it approached Belghoria station, about 15 km from here. The gang then jumped off the train and escaped under the cover of darkness.

A Government Railway Police (GRP) team found the girls lying unconscious near the tracks and took them to a hospital. The condition of two of the girls is said to be critical.

A complaint has been lodged with the GRP but no one has been arrested so far.
