Makhdoom Javed Hashmi, acting chief of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), made the comment at a large rally in Rawalpindi over the weekend. He was referring to the country’s break up and the emergence of Bangladesh in 1971, the Daily Times reported.

Set to return to National Assembly after 193 weeks, Hashmi, however, said that he saluted the army and called security personnel his “brothers and sons”.

In 2004, the PML-N leader was sentenced to 23 years imprisonment for distributing at a press conference a letter with a Pakistan General Headquarters logo with comments against the army.

Hashmi was released from jail Saturday after the country’s Supreme Court suspended his sentence that kept him behind bars.
