Iran criticizes Iraq President for comments on Algiers accord

By NNN-IRNA

Tehran : Iranian Foreign Ministry has criticized Iraqi President Jalal Talabani for making comments on Iran-Iraq Accord signed in Algiers in 1975.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said Tuesday that Iran believes the Accord signed in 1975 serves as a basis for development of friendship and cooperation between the two nations.

He said that the Accord has envisaged prospects for enhancing level of ties between the two neighboring states.

“The president is expected to observe the principles of the Accord and international law consistent with the good neighborly relations and abide by the Constitution of Iraq the Article 8 of which obliges the president to honor the commitments Iraq has made in line with international accords,” Hosseini said.

The spokesman said that Iran respects the Accord Iran and Iraq signed in Algiers on June 13, 1975 and never challenged its provisions.

“According to the international law, the Accord on land and river borders between Iran and Iraq is valid and has been registered with the United Nations,” Hosseini said.
