Tehran : Visiting Head of Turkish Parliament’s Foreign Relations Commission Murat Mercan conferred on Tuesday with the Chairman of the Expediency Council Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani on issues of mutual concerns.
At the meeting, Rafsanjani underlined that some enemies try to harm relations among significant countries in the region but close cooperation between Iran and Turkey could thwart such plots.
In view of the untapped potentials of Iran and Turkey, the current level of relations between the two countries is not satisfactory, he pointed out.
Referring to the current developments in the north of Iraq, he said some of political opponents try to fish in troubled waters and harm the interests of both peoples.
Iran, Turkey and Syria have had very constructive negotiations on regional developments which could be continued, he said.
Significant developments in Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine and Syria have created suitable grounds for exchange of views and cooperation among regional countries, Rafsanjani said.
Recent successful parliamentary elections in Turkey as well as constitutional referendum would create a very good image for Turkey, he said.
At the meeting, the Turkish envoy, described the grounds for expansion of mutual ties and cooperation between the two countries as quite extensive.
As the two powerful countries in the region, both countries could play a much more pro-active role in restoring peace, stability and welfare in the region, he said.
Resolving current developments in Palestine and Iraq could lead to a durable peace and stability in the region, he said adding that Iran and Turkey shoulder heavy responsibilities to this end and through cooperation could foil the plots of the enemies.
Current security cooperation between the two countries as well as the fight against terrorism would be to the benefit of both sides, he concluded.
