New York : Indian American Om Malik, who passed out from Delhi’s St. Stephen’s college, has been named as one of the global web celebrities by Forbes magazine.
Malik is ranked 12th for technology blogging on the US magazine’s annual ‘Web Celeb 25’ list, that includes video hosts and gadget gurus besides bloggers.
A chemistry graduate from St. Stephen’s College, Malik, 41, founded http://gigaom.com in 2006 after making a name for himself as a technology journalist.
The site covers topics ranging from broadband and online games to Web 2.0. and claims a global audience of 1.5 million consumers and professionals interested in high-tech news.
“Om Malik has a long history as a tech journalist, writing for outlets including Business 2.0, Red Herring and The Wall Street Journal (he was also one of the founding staffers of Forbes.com ). But true web celebrity status didn’t come for the Indian-born writer until 2001, when he started his own technology blog, GigaOm,” Forbes noted.
Pointing out that Malik frequently appears on television as a tech expert, the business magazine added that his popular website has received funding from sources including San Francisco-based venture firm True Ventures.
Leading the Forbes list is Perez Hilton (real name: Mario Lavandeira), who runs the gossip blog at http://perezhilton.com, and whose poison pen is feared by Hollywood stars.
At 17th position in the list is none other Dan Lyons, the editor of Forbes itself. He had started a pseudonymous blog, posing as the alter ego of Apple CEO Steve Jobs.
