Musharraf appeals for peace

Islamabad : President Pervez Musharraf Thursday appealed for peace after violence erupted in parts of Pakistan following the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.

The president asked people to calm down “so that the evil designs of terrorists can be defeated”.

Musharraf also convened an emergency meeting of top officials to review the situation, state-run television reported.

His comments came after a gunman shot dead Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Benazir Bhutto, 54, at an election rally in Rawalpindi.

On Wednesday, Musharraf had publicly stated that “militancy and Talibanization are neither the future of Pakistan nor of Afghanistan.

“We must defeat the regressive forces that have disrupted the peace and harmony of our societies,” he said at a news conference with Afghan leader Hamid Karzai.
