New Delhi : Sunil comfortably out-boxed England's Paul Butler to claim the flyweight gold medal in the fifth Commonwealth boxing championships in Liverpool, England, according to information reaching here.
Sunil won the 51-kg title beating Butler on points (27-11) Saturday night.
The other two Indians in the finals, Thokchom Nanao Singh (48-kg) and Rakesh Arvind Kalaskar (60-kg) had to remain content with silver medals as they lost to P. Barnes of Northern Ireland 17-21 and Tom Stalker of England 10-32 respectively, said the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation press release.
England won the team title followed by Australia and India in second and third place. Ireland took the fourth place, while Canada were fifth in the team standings.
India finished the championship with a gold, two silver and six bronze medals.
Sunil, a world cadet champion, started warily in his final against local lad Butler, popularly known as the 'Baby Faced Assassin' and was leading 3-2 and 9-4 at the end of the first two rounds.
The third round saw the Indian in his elements as he cleverly sidestepped Butler's attack and kept scoring with intelligent jabs to finish the round with a 16-5 advantage.
Egged on by the partisan crowd, Butler went for broke in the fourth and final round knowing that only a knockout would win him the bout. But Sunil was equal to the task as he used the ring intelligently to avoid the Englishman and romp home a 27-11 winner.
