Iran slams proposed U.S. arms deal with Saudi Arabia

Tehran : Iran on Monday condemned a recent U.S. offer of arms supply to Saudi Arabia, saying this was aimed at spreading fear and worries among countries in the Middle East, the state media reported.

"The region needs peace, stability and security, the United States has always had special policy of spreading fear in the region and tarnishing existing good relations" among countries in this region, Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini saidat his weekly press conference.

"The U.S. is trying to disturb it by selling weapons to the region," he added.

According to media reports, under the proposed arms deal, the United States planned to sell to Saudi Arabia sophisticated weaponries with an estimated value of 20 billion U.S. dollars.

The United States has been at odds with Iran over its controversial nuclear program, and it also accused Tehran of supporting Iraqi insurgents. Iran has denied both the allegations.
