Cairo : Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert are likely to take part in an international meeting over the stalled Middle East peace process in Egypt late June.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit Sunday said the Quartet – which groups the US, the European Union, Russia and the United Nations – has decided to invite the Palestinians and Israelis to participate in the meeting scheduled for June 26.
The minister was speaking to reporters at a joint press conference with visiting Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen.
Earlier, Egyptian foreign ministry spokesman Alaa el-Hadidi said Egypt has agreed with the international Quartet for Middle East peace to hold a meeting in the country's Red Sea resort Sharm el-Sheikh.
The meeting will look into taking specific steps to halt violence between Israel and the Palestinians and reach a comprehensive cease-fire to help resume the stalled Middle East peace process.
