Indian Navy chief in Britain to enhance relations

By IRNA
New Delhi : The Indian Navy chief, Admiral Sureesh Mehta, is currently in Britain on a visit aimed at enhancing relations between the navies of the two countries.

"The visit will help identify new areas of cooperation, further the scope and content of combined exercises and increase cross attachment of personnel," an Indian Navy statement said Wednesday.

The visit, which began Monday, will conclude Saturday.

During his stay in Britain, Mehta will meet his Royal Navy counterpart Admiral Jonathan Bond, who is designated the First Sea Lord, and other senior officers of the defense ministry.

Among those he will meet are the Chief of Defense Staff Air Chief Marshal Jock Stirrup, and the Permanent Under Secretary of Defense Bill Jeffrey.

Mehta will also visit a naval shipyard, the permanent joint headquarters of the British armed forces, and Royal Naval training establishments.

"Discussions on the security situation in the Indian Ocean Region, west and southeast Asia and about the experiences of the British armed forces in the recent past are also on the agenda," the statement said.

"The modalities for sharing of information in the maritime domain are likely to figure prominently," it added.
