Amman : Visiting Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdel Aziz and Jordan's King Abdullah II on Wednesday stressed the need to implement the Arab peace initiative revived during an Arab summit in Riyadh in late March.
According to a royal palace statement, Saudi King Abdullah, who is the first Saudi ruler to visit Jordan in more than 25 years, and Jordan's King Abdullah renewed the two countries' commitment towards the Arab pace initiative.
The two leaders agree that the initiative reflects the true will of Arabs to achieve a lasting peace to end the conflict with Israel and enables the Palestinians to establish their own independent state on their soil in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
The Arab peace initiative offers to extend recognition to Israel by all Arab countries provided that it withdraws from all Arab territories it occupied in the 1967 six-day war, including East Jerusalem.
The two leaders discussed means of activating Arab coordination with the International Quartet Committee with the aim of pushing the peace process forward, the statement said.
They affirmed their keenness for consultation and coordination in a bid to foster an Arab solidarity to counter the regional challenges.
Both leaders expressed backing to the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and reiterated their support for the Palestinian legitimacy as represented by the National Authority "in order to enable the Palestinian side to be an efficient and strong partner in the peace process."
They also warned of the hazard of breakdown in the Palestinian territories, affirming that the interior fission and breakup in Palestine would not serve the Palestinian national interests and would rather give Israel "a pretext for not to fulfill peace commitments."
On the situation in Iraq and Lebanon, the two leaders affirmed their support for efforts to restore security and stability in both countries, stressing that dialogue is the only way to achieve the national concord, to end the difficult conditions suffered by the two countries and to reject any foreign interference.
They also discussed means of boosting bilateral relations in various sectors.
Saudi Arabia's king arrived in Jordan on the second leg of a regional tour that has also taken him to Egypt.
